Heritage For All Community Engagement Historian/Research Fellow History Colorado (2024-Present)
History Colorado's Heritage for All project is a statewide effort to place 150 new sites on the state and national historic registers by 2026, in celebration of the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence and the 150th anniversary of Colorado's statehood. This project specifically seeks to address the lack of listed sites related to communities of color, women, and LGBTQ+ Coloradans.
As one of three Heritage for All fellows, I have worked with the State Historic Preservation Office to identify, research, and nominate new sites related to these under-recognized histories. I have also assisted in community outreach efforts all around Colorado to promote historic preservation, Heritage for All, and the work of the State Historic Fund.
Map Consultant Rio Vista Bracero Museum, City of Socorro, TX (2022-2024)
The Rio Vista Bracero Museum is an ongoing project funded by the Mellon Foundation Humanities in Place program. Rio Vista farm is the last remaining Bracero processing site, and was designated a National Historic Landmark in 2023. This museum will highlight the experiences of Mexican farm laborers who participated in the Bracero Program from the 1940s to '60s.
In addition to serving as a consultant during the early development stages of the museum, I was contracted to research and create a series of digital maps for display at the museum. These maps cover a number of themes related to Bracero laborers, their experiences, and backgrounds.
Digital Curator/Archivist Proyecto Bracero Association of Applied Border History (2018-2022)
Proyecto Bracero is a grassroots effort by the Association of Applied Border History (AABH) to digitally preserve and archive over 100 boxes of letters, contracts, and photographs donated by former Braceros to the Border Farmworkers Center in El Paso, TX. To date, the project has digitized over 6,000 documents.
As co-founder of the AABH, I spearheaded this digitization and archival project, including creating accession records, metadata standards for the project, and the Omeka-based digital archive for the project. I also worked with out community partners to ensure that our archival work did not interrupt the lives of the farm workers who depended on the resources of the center, scheduling volunteers and trainings around their schedule.
